Athens Bush HoggingBush Hogging, Forestry Mulching, Land Clearing & Grading
Athens Bush Hogging approaches land clearing differently than most companies. We use specialized equipment based on the specific job type.
Our services include:
- Land Clearing
- Forestry Mulching
- Bush Hogging
- Tree Removal
- Grading
We bring over 15 years of experience with land development, project management, and customer service. We define the work clearly, choose equipment for the job and review the finish against your plans. From overgrown fields to white oak, hickory and loblolly pine lots around Athens, we match the work to your property. Sweetgum regrowth and Chinese privet thickets call for different cutting methods. We plan around retained trees, Piedmont slopes, drainage routes and wetter creek bottoms before equipment arrives.
Land Clearing Projects

2-Acre Forestry Mulching
The customer wanted to open up 2 acres of wooded area. We mulched dense underbrush and smaller trees while keeping the marked trees. The cut material stayed on the ground as mulch, leaving the area easier to walk and maintain.
- Project Cost
- $3,200
- Timeline
- 1 day

3-Acre Land Clearing
The owners wanted space for an additional barn on their lightly wooded 3-acre property. We removed the unwanted trees and underbrush, ground the specified stumps and hauled away the clearing debris. This opened the footprint for the next stage of property preparation.
- Project Cost
- $5,700
- Timeline
- 3 days

5-Acre Bush Hogging
The customer wanted to walk and enjoy their 5-acre field with family. We bush hogged the tall grass, weeds and light brush to a manageable height. The rough-cut field stayed open, with surrounding trees retained and cuttings left on-site.
- Project Cost

- Timeline
- 3–4 hours

Land Clearing Questions,
Clear Answers.
Do I need approval for land clearing in Athens?
The parcel and scope determine the requirements. Athens-Clarke County uses tree management plans for applicable development and land-disturbance work. Routine mowing, tree removal, clearing and grading are different activities. We check the actual jurisdiction and required approvals before cutting trees or disturbing soil. Nearby counties and cities have their own processes.
What is the difference between bush hogging, mulching and clearing?
Our bush hogging cuts grass, weeds and light brush with stems up to about 1 inch. Our track-loader mulching process handles underbrush and suitable trees up to 7 inches, leaving mulch on-site. Land clearing addresses permit-approved larger trees, stump or root work and hauling, as included in your quote.
Will forestry mulching remove the roots and stumps?
A suitable mulching head can reduce exposed stumps, but mulching is not the same as extracting roots. If the area will become a driveway, barn or house pad, confirm the separate root-removal and ground-preparation requirements.
Is debris removal included?
Forestry mulch normally remains on the ground. For tree removal and land clearing, define whether material will be hauled away, processed on-site or left in agreed locations. Stump grinding and root extraction should also be listed separately.
How much does land clearing cost per acre?
Acreage alone does not establish the price. Tree size and density, access, wet ground, stump work, hauling and the desired finish all matter. The starting figures above are project allowances, not per-acre rates or fixed offers.
How long will my project take?
Light cutting may take hours, while clearing and haul-off can take several days. The case studies show individual scopes, not guaranteed production rates. Acreage, ground conditions, equipment access, weather and approvals affect the schedule.
Can you keep selected oak, hickory and pine trees?
Yes. We mark retained trees and plan access around their roots. Equipment traffic, debris piles and grade changes can damage trees even when trunks remain. Applicable tree-management plans and protection requirements shape the clearing footprint.
Can you work near Athens creeks and wet ground?
We assess access, soil support, drainage and the proposed footprint first. Creek bottoms and saturated ground may need a different approach or schedule. Applicable stream buffers, wetland rules and floodplain requirements are checked before disturbance.
Does grading make the property ready to build?
Rough grading establishes an agreed shape; it does not certify a foundation pad. The building project may need engineered elevations, suitable fill, compaction testing, drainage approval and inspections. Agree on the handoff requirements with the next contractor.
Will cutting privet or sweetgum stop it from returning?
Not necessarily. Privet can sprout from roots, and sweetgum can regrow from stumps and lateral roots. Mulching opens the area, but follow-up maintenance may be needed. We discuss the desired finish and future cutting rather than promising permanent eradication.
Are all native understory plants unwanted brush?
No. Native trees, shrubs and ground cover support wildlife and can help protect soil. We identify what the owner wants to retain and agree on paths, field edges and clearing limits. Removing invasive privet is a different goal from clearing every native plant.
